Case Study
J&M Welding Inc. partnered with a general contractor to deliver a custom steel shade structure as part of a comprehensive residential remodel in Paso Robles, CA. The goal was to provide a sleek and functional outdoor covering that blended with the home’s contemporary architecture while enhancing the usability of the patio and poolside area.
While this was a straightforward structural build, coordination was key. The project was part of a broader remodeling effort with several subcontractors working simultaneously. This required careful planning and adaptability to stay in sync with site logistics and scheduling.

Process
-
Site Measurements & Planning
Our team began by visiting the site to take accurate measurements of the patio layout and structural interface with the home. This stage ensured all connection points and ground anchors were accounted for precisely. -
Shop Drawings
We created detailed CAD shop drawings to visualize the steel frame’s layout, dimensions, and weld points. These were shared with the general contractor to confirm alignment with the remodel plans before fabrication began. -
Fabrication in the Shop
The steel components—including vertical posts, roof beams, and cross supports—were custom fabricated in our Paso Robles shop. Each piece was precision cut, welded, and prepped for installation, ensuring strength and durability. -
On-Site Installation
Our crew delivered and installed the steel structure on-site, using ladders and lifts to assemble the overhead canopy. Anchoring the posts into the pre-prepped footings, we completed installation with clean welds and tight connections for long-term performance.
Challenges
While the steel structure itself was relatively simple, the primary challenge lay in coordinating logistics with multiple subcontractors and ongoing remodeling work. We worked closely with the general contractor to ensure proper timing for installation, adjusting our schedule around concrete curing times and material deliveries to avoid workflow disruptions.
Results
The project was completed on time and on budget, with the homeowner and contractor both expressing satisfaction with the strength, aesthetics, and craftsmanship of the new structure. The custom steel shade offers a modern outdoor living enhancement that will stand up to Paso Robles’ weather for years to come.
