Case Study
J&M Welding Inc. was contracted by a Paso Robles winery to fabricate a set of custom metal table bases for their newly designed wine tasting room. The client envisioned uniquely shaped tables that would later be finished with countertops. While the overall fabrication process followed our typical approach, this project was notable for the unusual geometry and precise angles required to bring the designs to life.

Process
- Client Consultation & Measurements
We met with the client on-site at the tasting room to review the design vision and take precise measurements. Understanding the layout and design intent was essential due to the non-standard shapes involved in the project. - Shop Drawings & CAD Design
Using the collected measurements and design input, our team developed detailed shop drawings and CAD files to map out the fabrication of each table frame. This stage was especially critical given the complex angles and symmetry requirements. - Fabrication in the Shop
In our Paso Robles shop, our crew began fabricating the custom steel frames. We used precision welding techniques to ensure clean joins and accurate alignment. (Image 1: Creating frames in the shop) - Finishing & Painting
Once fabrication was complete, the table bases were sent out for powder coating in a variety of bold custom colors selected by the client. Each frame received a high-quality finish that ensures durability while aligning with the winery’s unique aesthetic. (Image 2: Fabricated table base before paint) - Delivery & Installation
After painting, our team returned to the winery for delivery and placement of the finished table frames. The countertops will be added later by another contractor, but our part of the project was successfully completed. (Image 3: Painted frames delivered and installed in the wine tasting room)
Challenges
The biggest challenge on this project was working with the non-traditional angles in the table designs. Our team relied on exact measurements, custom jigs, and highly detailed shop drawings to make sure every piece fit perfectly. Careful fit-up, clamping, and welding ensured each frame was both functional and visually aligned with the design intent.
Final Outcome
The final result was a striking set of custom powder-coated table bases, each fabricated to spec and tailored to the modern interior of the winery’s tasting room. The colorful finishes and clean fabrication brought the client’s vision to life and created a standout design element for their space.
The winery team was thrilled with the outcome, and the project was completed on time and to spec. This case study highlights J&M Welding Inc.’s ability to tackle complex, creative fabrication projects with precision and professionalism.
Beginning of Project – Fabrication Setup
This photo captures the initial phase of the project, where the custom table frames were laid out on the welding table for precise assembly. Each steel tube was measured, cut, and clamped in place to ensure accuracy. With unusual angles to account for, this stage was crucial for achieving the correct geometric layout before welding.
Middle of Project – Assembly and Fit-Up
In the middle stage, the steel panels and components were assembled into their final form. The welded structure takes shape with clear attention to fit-up and alignment. In the background, you can see one of our welders working on a different unit, showcasing the activity in the shop during the production of these unique tables.
End of Project – Powder Coated and Installed
The final image shows the completed metal table bases painted in vibrant colors like orange, blue, and teal, now installed in the wine tasting room. The finished bases are sleek and modern, creating a playful yet elegant foundation for the countertops that will follow. This polished presentation reflects the quality and craftsmanship of J&M Welding Inc.
